This Payhip review covers a store platform where you can sell ebooks, courses, memberships and coaching, starting on a free plan with a 5% fee. Our research-based verdict is 4 out of 5. Its fees are clear and it handles some taxes, but account-closure complaints and unproven traffic keep the score down.

The 5 risks to weigh before you sell on Payhip
- Account closures are the most repeated serious complaint. Reviewers on two sites describe stores closed without a clear explanation.
- The terms favor Payhip. It may remove a file without prior notice and change the terms at its sole discretion.
- Fees stack. Payhip’s fee comes on top of PayPal or Stripe fees on every plan.
- Traffic is not included. Recent reviewers mention poor Google search traction, and we found no proof of buyer traffic.
- The ratings conflict. Trustpilot shows 4.5 out of 5, while an older SmartCustomer page shows 2.8.
What Is Payhip, and Who Is It For?
Payhip is run by Payhip Limited, a company registered in England and Wales. It lets you sell digital downloads, online courses, memberships, coaching and physical products from one store. Its own page lists ebooks, software, design assets, templates, video and music as sellable downloads.
The vendor says its store builder needs no coding. It also says you can connect a custom domain for free and embed checkout on an existing site. It also says it is trusted by over 130,000 creators, which is a vendor claim we could not verify.
The best fit, in this Payhip review’s view, is a beginner with a finished digital product, such as a printable, template or ebook. If you need product ideas first, see our list of digital products to sell online for a start. Our Rapid PDF Cash Method course covers turning simple one-page PDFs into products.
Payhip Pricing and Fees: What You Actually Pay
This part of our Payhip review we could check directly, because the numbers sit on Payhip’s live pricing page. We read it on September 21, 2026.
| Plan | Monthly price | Platform fee | Beats the plan below when sales exceed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free forever | $0 | 5% of each sale | — |
| Plus | $29 | 2% of each sale | about $967 a month (vs Free) |
| Pro | $99 | No transaction fee | $3,500 a month (vs Plus) |
Every plan includes all features, unlimited products and unlimited revenue, so you pay more only to cut the percentage. Payhip says no credit card is needed to start. PayPal and Stripe still charge their standard rates on every plan, and Payhip says it deposits your sales immediately after a transaction completes.

For scale, Etsy’s 10-K lists a 6.5% transaction fee plus a $0.20 listing fee per item, as we broke down in our Etsy seller income analysis. Payhip’s free tier costs less per sale, but Etsy brings its own buyers and Payhip does not promise any.
What You Can Sell, Which Payments Work, and Who Handles Tax
| Area | What Payhip says |
|---|---|
| Digital downloads | Ebooks, software, design assets, templates, video and music |
| Online courses | Video, files, quizzes, assignments, drip publishing and completion certificates |
| Memberships and coaching | Recurring payments for members; 1:1 coaching with Zoom and Calendly integrations |
| Physical products | Inventory and order management |
| Payment providers | 13 integrations, including Stripe, PayPal, Square, Mollie, Paystack and Razorpay, depending on your country |
| EU and UK VAT | Payhip acts as reseller and reports and pays the VAT |
| US and Canadian sales tax | Payhip says it is responsible for collecting and paying it |
The tax handling is a real difference for a beginner selling worldwide. Gumroad’s pricing page says it became merchant of record on January 1, 2025 and handles all tax obligations. Ko-fi’s pricing page says you connect your own PayPal or Stripe and that it never holds your money, and we found no tax statement there. If you sell in other places with other tax rules, Payhip says you set the rates and it sends you the collected amount.
Payhip vs Gumroad vs Ko-fi: Platform Fees Compared
This Payhip review compares only listed fees, because the three platforms describe features differently. All figures come from each platform’s own pricing page.
| Platform | Monthly price | Fee on shop sales | Tax and payment notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Payhip Free / Plus / Pro | $0 / $29 / $99 | 5% / 2% / 0% | Handles EU/UK VAT and US/Canadian sales tax; PayPal or Stripe fees extra |
| Gumroad | $0 | 10% + $0.50 per sale; 30% via Discover | Merchant of record since Jan 1, 2025; page lists no separate processing fee |
| Ko-fi Standard / Gold | $0 / $12 | 5% / 0% | Connect PayPal or Stripe; processor fees extra |

On that example, Ko-fi Gold is the cheapest at $12, and Payhip Plus ($49) edges out Payhip Free and Ko-fi Standard ($50). Gumroad’s direct fee comes to $120. Treat the totals in this Payhip review as rough, since Gumroad’s page lists no separate processing fee while the others add PayPal or Stripe fees. Ko-fi’s page also centers on tips and memberships, and we did not compare features.

Are Payhip’s Reviews Trustworthy? 4.5 on Trustpilot, 2.8 on SmartCustomer
For a Payhip review, the two rating pages we opened disagree sharply, and the reasons matter more than either number.
| Source | Rating | Reviews | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trustpilot | 4.5 / 5 | 530 | 79% five-star, 13% one-star; Payhip replied to 15% of negative reviews |
| SmartCustomer | 2.8 / 5 | 43 | Reviews run from January 2023 to May 2024; 53% one-star; the site says Payhip has not invited feedback |
| Payhip’s own claim | — | — | “Trusted by over 130,000 creators” is a vendor claim we could not verify |
Trustpilot has far more reviews and much newer ones. Its recent reviewers praise ease of use and support. One calls it “easy to use, even if you’re not a computer expert” (September 14, 2026). SmartCustomer’s sample is small, older, and self-selected toward unhappy users. Neither proves how Payhip treats a typical seller, so read both as signals, not verdicts. Our guide to spotting a fake guru explains why vendor-chosen testimonials deserve the same caution.
Account Closures: The Complaint to Take Seriously
In both sources, reviewers describe stores closed without a clear explanation. On Trustpilot, 13% of reviews are one-star, and the complaints include closures and slow support. On SmartCustomer, older reviewers describe losing stores, products and money after closures. This Payhip review can’t verify why any account was closed, and Payhip’s side is not shown.
The terms give context. Payhip may remove a file “without providing prior notice” if it judges the file infringes or is likely to infringe someone’s intellectual property. It can change the terms at its sole discretion, and you must hold an active PayPal or Stripe account. The terms also say you should keep your own backups, since Payhip is not a backup service.
Traffic: Payhip Takes Payments, It Does Not Promise Buyers
A store is only useful if people find it. Recent Trustpilot reviewers mention Google indexing problems and “very poor Google search traction” (September 3, 2026). Payhip’s site does list a marketplace, but we found no data on how much traffic it sends, so plan to bring your own buyers.
A Payhip review cannot promise traffic, so learn how search works before you launch. Keep expectations grounded as well: our side hustle statistics show how modest typical earnings are.
Payhip Cost Calculator: Which Plan Fits Your Sales?

Who Should Use Payhip, and Who Should Skip It?
Best for: our Payhip review found it suits beginners who already have a product and a way to bring visitors, and who want low fees plus VAT and sales-tax handling. If that is you, you can check the current plans on Payhip’s site and start on the free tier.
Skip if: you need a platform to find buyers for you, or you cannot risk losing a store. Also skip it if you cannot back up your own files and customer list. We found no seller refund policy in Payhip’s terms, so confirm that before signing up.
Alternatives: Gumroad for a similar model with a higher fee, or Ko-fi for tips and memberships with a $12 fee-free tier. Etsy suits you if you want a marketplace’s built-in buyers, as in our comparison of other marketplaces to sell on. Promoting digital products instead of selling them? Final Verdict: Our Payhip Review Score
The verdict of this Payhip review: clear fees, a full-featured free plan and real tax handling make it a strong starting point. Closure complaints and no proof of traffic hold it back. Start free, back up everything, and keep your own customer list.
We scored it on evidence. It earns strong marks for transparent pricing, tax handling and payment options. It loses points for the closure complaints, terms that favor the platform, and the lack of traffic evidence. The score comes from research, not a hands-on test.
Evidence and Proof: What We Could and Could Not Find
We include no testimonials of our own in this Payhip review because we did not use the platform. We also skipped the customer quotes Payhip chose for its own pages, since vendors pick their happiest users. The only user quotes here come from dated Trustpilot reviews.
We could not verify Payhip’s user count, how much traffic its marketplace sends, or why individual accounts were closed. If independent data on those points appears, this is where it will go.
Payhip Review FAQ: Common Questions
Is Payhip free?
Yes, there is a free forever plan with no monthly fee and a 5% transaction fee. Payhip says every plan includes all features, and that no credit card is needed to start. PayPal or Stripe fees still apply on top of Payhip’s fee.
How much does Payhip cost?
Free is $0 a month plus 5% per sale, Plus is $29 a month plus 2%, and Pro is $99 a month with no transaction fee. By our arithmetic, Plus beats Free above about $967 of monthly sales.
Does Payhip handle sales tax and VAT?
Payhip says it acts as reseller for EU and UK digital VAT and is responsible for collecting and paying US and Canadian sales tax. For other taxes, you set the rates, and Payhip collects the amount and sends it to you.
Which payment methods does Payhip support?
Payhip’s payment-gateways page lists 13 integrations, including Stripe, PayPal, Square, Mollie, Paystack and Razorpay. Which ones you see depends on your country, and you can connect more than one.
Is Payhip better than Gumroad?
On listed fees, Payhip is cheaper: Gumroad charges 10% plus $0.50 per direct sale, versus Payhip’s 5% on the free plan. Gumroad, however, is merchant of record and handles all tax obligations. Neither platform promises buyers.
Is Payhip legit?
It is a real company, Payhip Limited in England and Wales, with published pricing and terms. Its Trustpilot score is 4.5 from 530 reviews, but repeated complaints about account closures mean you should back up your files and start on the free plan.
Can Payhip close my account?
Reviewers on Trustpilot and SmartCustomer describe closures without clear explanation. The terms also let Payhip remove a file without prior notice if it judges the file likely infringes intellectual property, and to change its terms at its sole discretion.
